Beijing,
the host of the 29th Summer Olympic Games
in the history of Modern Olympics.

Beijing,
the capital of China, can trace its history to 1000
BC. In a contemporary perspective, Beijing came into
prominence around the 13the Century during the times
of the Mongols and Kublai Khan and has since in
essence remained China's Capital.

A
magnificent, must see place, Beijing is home to the
Forbidden City (home of the emperors of the Ming and
Qing Dynasties) and Tinanmen Square (The Tinanmen is
the main entrance to the Forbidden City) and
numerous other cultural and historical landmarks and
parks. Modern China, The People's Republic of
China, was formed in Beijing on October 1, 1949.

Beijing
is known for its tea-houses. For the culinary
minded, Mandarin Cuisine is the cooking style.

total of 28 sports will feature on the program for
the Beijing Games. These 28 sports are made up of
302 events, comprising 165 men's events, 127 women's
events and 10 mixed events.

Several
new events added to the Beijing 2008 Games as well
as one new discipline - BMX. New events include the
women's 3,000 metre steeplechase, men's and women's
BMX, women's foil and sabre team events, men's and
women's marathon swimming 10km events and the
replacement of the doubles events in table tennis by
team events.

- 11,000 athletes are expected to participate in
the Games. From
the 245 participants from 15 nations in the first
Modern Summer Olympic Games in 1896, the Games grew
to over 11,000 competitors from 202 countries at the
2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
